MANGOLO RECREATIONAL PARK

The Mangolo Forest of 5.200 ha has been reserved as nature recreation park on April 2, 1990 by decree of Minister of Forestry no. 142/Kpts-II/90, following recommendation of Governor of South East Sulawesi Province no. 522.12/340 dated December 12, 1986, and letter of Directorate-General PHPA no. 830/DJ-VI/Bin.Prog/1988 dated June 9, 1988. The main reason for establishing this nature recreational park is the great potency of flora fauna, potency of nature recreation e.g. warm spring,  waterfall, natural caves, and beautiful natural panorama. Before, the Mangolo was a protected forest.

The Mangolo is geographically positioned between 3°57' - 3°59' southern latitude and 122°35' - 122°37' eastern longitude, which is administratively part of Mangolo Village, Kolaka District. Management of this area is under the authority of RPH Kolaka Selatan, BKPH Mekongga, KPH Kolaka. The Mangolo Nature Recreational Park is bordered by Mowewe Village in the north, Kalakasia and Sakuli Villages in the east, Mangolo Village in the south, and Damar Bulan Village in the west.

The Mangolo Park is at an altitude of 5 - 500, topographically hilly with slope between 5% - 30%. Based on Schmidt-Fergusson, the Mangolo has climate type C, with dry season on August until December. Its temperature ranges 19°C - 33°C.

Some flora founded are 'eha', banyan tree, 'bitti', 'uru', and some species of rattan. Monkey, deer, hornbill, python, wild pig, and various species of bird are some flora of the Mangolo.

The main recreational potency are warm spring, waterfall, and natural caves.

The Mangolo Park is easily accessible from Kolaka (± 7 km). It only takes 15 minutes by bus.

The main problems faced are clearing the forest for cocoa plantation, illegal logging, and grabbing rattan.
